birthmarked: It was always an ambition to record my songs. Through a stroke of luck I was put in touch with the very talented knob twiddler, Arthur Wilson, by a colleague and friend, Jim Bathgate, and that meeting led to this CD. I performed the songs straight off so there's no big productions but it has a certain charm. In reality, when I started recording with Arthur, many of the songs were lyrically unfinished so I got together with yet another colleague, Bob Shields, who happens to be one of the best poets in Scotland, and he helped me complete a lot of them. I have a great deal to thank Jim, Arthur and Bob for and I am really grateful for all of their help and guidance. I can look back on recording birthmarked as a significant point in my life for many reasons but I am particularly glad that it has since given me the opportunity to meet so many musicians and to make so many new friends.

Speaking In Tongues is the CD I made as part of a group of poets and singer songwriters called The Travelling Waverlies. This was our first CD and we are currently working on a second. The mixture of poetry and song is what we are all about and we try hard to work on integrated pieces.

The Harbour At Symi is a mini CD featuring the title track as a song/poem combination with Bob Shields and Martin Boland. I co-wrote Symi with my wife, Jane. We both love the little Greek island and regard it as a very special place for us. I would love to perform at the Symi Music Festival one day and perhaps get the chance to play the song there.
War On War was a Dutch compilation CD produced as a gesture against the war in Iraq. Mike Dillon, one of The Travelling Waverlies, features on the CD singing a song I co-wrote with Mike and Bob called Rockets Over Babylon.

Companions was a brilliant experience. It features three songs each by six songwriters; myself, Arthur Wilson, Mark Barnett, Martin Boland, Mike Dillon and Kenny Vass and we have all now produced solo CDs.

The Journeyman was my second solo CD and on this one I was able to get the help of a lot of great musicians and singers to help make it what I consider to be a very special recording. I think it contains some of the best songs I've written.

As Eden Lay In Darkness is one of the latest CDs. The title is taken from a line in one of the songs and combines the themes of philosophy, religion and sex. It is a mixture of americana, country, folk and contemporary writing. A lot of the songs were co-written with Bob Shields and I think it has layers of meaning whilst being accessible at one and the same time.

Banishment is the other new CD and is connected to Eden by themes. I have tried very hard to provide a consistent level of quality in terms of the writing. There are so many brilliant performances from the guest performers on both CDs that I could spend all day pointing them out. A few of my favourite moments would be the exchange between the trumpet and violin on Prada Heels on the Eden CD, the first time the slide guitar comes in on Without Tears on the Banishment CD, the choir on We All Want To Go Home Now, the vocals from Karen and Inge on Hawthorn, the violin on Boston, the accordion on The Woman, the electric guitar on I Want To Be Kissed, the keyboard / steel drum break on The Last Sailor Man, the harmonies on Sonoma & Sistine, the line "'til death or temptation do us part" on The Blue Part Of My Heart, the harmonica on Little Lucifer and the harmonies on Will You Fly Away? I could go on.

The Journeyman

The Journeyman

£7.00

The Journeyman displays a range of writing styles that I hope helps establish it as more than just a very good CD. The production values are as high as possible and all of the songs benefit from being well arranged . I had the help of some superb musicians and performers to make it really special. I honestly believe it's about as good a CD as I'll ever produce and I love every song on it.

Shoeshine Boy [3:28]  lyrics
Notes on the song A song about the life and death of Hank Williams on the road between Knoxville and Oak Hill and the mystery in between. Notes on the writing and the recording Bob and I tried to write this in everyday, conversational language; almost in the way that people would relate the story. The complexity comes from the man himself. I have long been fascinated by the way the story of his death reveals a confusion about where and when he actually died. The fact that it was on a road between two places that rhymed seems almost appropriate for someone like Hank in more ways than one and one of the sub-texts of the song is the mystery of the line between life and death. Another theme relates to the way people’s versions of the facts can often vary and how the truth can become blurred between what we know and what we hope. Yet another sub-text concerns how Hank’s story relates to the overall theme of Eden and banishment. He was banned from the Grand Ol’ Opry Show because of his behaviour. Born with a crooked back because of a spinal defect; we use that as a device to emphasise his internal demons. The recording was made in Dunkeld over the course of a week in March 2008 Vocals: Tom Fairnie Harmony: Jane Fairnie & Karen Dietz Guitar: Tom Fairnie 2nd guitar: Mark Barnett Double bass: Ken Kennedy Pedal steel guitar: Alastair Taylor Slide guitar: Bruce Hogg Percussion: Robin Brill

Falling Down [3:49]  lyrics
Notes on the song How everything falls; destroyed by obsession. Notes on the writing and the recording I admire the gothic horror writing of HP Lovecraft and Edgar Allen Poe and I wanted to write a gothic themed song using as much imagery as possible. The theme of the song is about how all empires fall, no matter how well built or how high they aspire. There are lots of literary and film references from a diverse range of sources such as The Bible, Wind In The Willows, The Raven, It’s A Wonderful Life, Neil Armstrong’s first words on stepping on to the surface of the moon, Greek legend and The Perfumed Garden amongst others. On cold, dark, winter mornings this is the song that most often falls into my head. We recorded it in Dunkeld and I particularly enjoyed the way that a very young and gifted violinist called Mhari Macdonald came along and just played the perfect accompaniment. Credits Vocals: Tom Fairnie Harmony: Inge McIlroy Guitar: Tom Fairnie 2nd guitar: Bernard Brogue Double bass: Ken Kennedy Violin: Mhari Macdonald Keyboard: Killian Playthell-Steele Processed tablas: Calum & Colin Mackechnie

Don't Wish Your Dreams Away [5:19]  lyrics
Notes on the song A song about staying true to our dreams. We can all recall times when a schoolteacher or a relative gave us a word of encouragement and we were elated by it. It’s so important. Notes on the writing and the recording I dedicated this song to Maureen Healey for not letting go of her dream and making it all the way to the Arctic Circle and also to Karen & Hugh Green for their love, friendship and their constant support of this song. Credits Vocals: Tom Fairnie Harmony: Jane Fairnie, Karen Dietz & Bernard Brogue Guitar: Tom Fairnie 2nd guitar: Bernard Brogue Double bass: Ken Kennedy

Sonoma & Sistine [4:09]  lyrics
Notes on the song A song about how temptation can find its way into the most hallowed places. Notes on the writing and the recording Jane and I were waiting for Mark, Karen and Bob to come along to do some recording at the house and just before they arrived the melody and first verse popped into my head. As they came along everyone seemed to help or modify it so it became a very collaborative piece of work. Bob and I later wrote the words and I re-constructed the song to become more orthodox in terms of the structure. I love Mark’s guitar and the harmonies. Emily’s violin is brilliant and gives it an authentic touch. It’s a song that contrasts the old world with the new, romance with sex, traditional art with contemporary and virtue with modern mores. Credits Vocals: Tom Fairnie Harmony: Jane Fairnie & Karen Dietz Guitar: Tom Fairnie 2nd guitar: Mark Barnett Double bass: Ken Kennedy Pedal steel guitar: Alastair Taylor Slide guitar: Bruce Hogg Percussion: Robin Brill Violin & Jaw’s Harp: Emily Peppers

Will You Fly Away? [4:26]  lyrics
Notes on the song A song about loyalty. Notes on the writing and the recording I wrote this song in 2003 but never felt totally comfortable with it. I remember asking the late Bryan Begg if he would help me re-write or modify the melody but he said that it didn’t need it. It took me to hear Jane singing the bridge to realise why it hadn’t worked before. It needed a female voice to carry the fragile nature of the fear we all have that someone we love might just fly away. I would like to dedicate it to Bryan whom we lost far too soon. Vocal: Tom Fairnie Harmony vocal: Jane Fairnie, Karen Dietz Guitar: Tom Fairnie 2nd Guitar: Mark Barnett Bass: Ken Kennedy Mandolin: Andrew Taylor Slide Guitar & Dobro: Bruce Hogg

I Ain't Goin' Dancin' No More [2:56]  lyrics
Notes on the song A song about the need to confess, to redeem ourselves...and hopefully write a catchy song as well. Notes on the writing and the recording Bob and I were commissioned to write a song about Trafalgar, which we took very seriously, but in between concentrating on that song we found time to play around with the guitar lick that I kept playing and wrote this one as well. Bob has another take on the same melody but this is the one that found its way on to the CD. What I particularly like is that the hook in the guitar accompaniment always catches the ear.
